“What are you doing, Dave?”

hal.jpg

HAL: I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal.  I’ve still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you.”

Testing . . . 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . Just seeing if anyone is paying attention . . .

OK, not really.  But, I was just thinking about some things.  That quote by HAL is the tagline I have used for my other blog for sometime now.   For some reason . . . it kinda hits the nail on the preverbal head to me over and over again.   I was just reading it again, and I was thinking how much it applies to so many things in life these days.  Yes, we all make very poor decisions at times, but we are trying to just be normal, with the greatest enthusiasm and confidence, of course? !?!

In case you are unaware . . . that quote from HAL is from 2001: A Space Odyssey, by Stanley Kubrick.

I think I just really like what it says and it’s significance in our lives.  Yes, it is a line from a really whacked out movie (if you ask me, anyway), but for some reason I like it . . . as well as others . . .

“HAL: I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a…fraid.  Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am a HAL 9000 computer. I became operational at the H.A.L. plant in Urbana, Illinois on the 12th of January 1992. My instructor was Mr. Langley, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it I can sing it for you.
Keir Dullea (Dave): Yes, I’d like to hear it, HAL. Sing it for me.
HAL: It’s called “Daisy.”
(sings while slowing down)
HAL: Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do. I’m half crazy all for the love of you. It won’t be a stylish marriage, I can’t afford a carriage. But you’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.”

Of course, the song “Daisy” is really “A Bicycle Built For Two.”  But, don’t you think it is great that a computer can sing a little diddy???  How many of us have HALs in our life that speak and sing and make us crazy?  Anythehoooo . . . I HEART HAL!!!

I mentioned that my blogs might be a little out there . . . just sayin’!

I really need to watch that movie again . . .

Hi, Crystal. I was thinking about putting a link to your blog on my blog, and that way some other people could find it better. Let me know if that’s okay.

Sure, Steve. That is fine. I just hope I don’t disappoint! Or, that I do not scare away any of your loyal readers. You know, some people just don’t get HAL. Link away . . .

Okay, it’s there.

Hey, I don’t get Hal, either. I figure it’s over my head. Never saw that movie.
